Daily vs Period-wise Attendance: Which Does Your Institution Need?
Are you counting days or counting classes? When daily attendance is enough, when colleges need period-wise attendance, and three rules that keep it honest.
Most schools take attendance once a day. Most colleges need more than that, because a student can be present in the morning lecture and missing from the afternoon practical. The question is simple: are you counting days, or are you counting classes?
Daily attendance: one mark per day
Daily attendance records whether a student came to the institution that day. It is quick, it suits younger classes where one class teacher stays with the class, and it answers the question parents care about most: did my child come to school?
Its limit is that it says nothing about what happened after the first bell. A student who leaves after lunch still shows as present.
Period-wise attendance: one mark per class
Period-wise attendance is marked by the teacher of each period, from the timetable. Each subject gets its own count, and lectures, tutorials and practicals can be counted separately. This is what most colleges need, because eligibility for exams is often worked out subject by subject.
The worry is always the workload on teachers. It stays light when the teacher only has to open their own period and tick the class list, instead of writing a register and typing it in later.
Which one should you use?
- Primary and middle school: daily attendance is usually enough.
- Senior secondary: period-wise helps when students move between subject teachers.
- Colleges: period-wise, with lecture, tutorial and practical counted separately.
Three rules that keep attendance honest
Mark it in the class, not later
Attendance typed in at the end of the week is a guess. Mark it during the period.
Lock it once it is saved
If anyone can change last month's attendance, the report is not worth much. Saved attendance should be locked, with only the admin able to unlock it when there is a genuine correction.
Let the right people see it
The HOD should see the department, the principal should see the institution, and parents should see their own child.
How CampusOS handles attendance
In CampusOS attendance, teachers mark present, absent or leave for their own period from the timetable, on the web or in the Android app. Lectures, tutorials and practicals are counted separately, attendance locks on save, and the admin can unlock it. Class reports download as Excel, HODs see their department, and parents see their child's attendance on the parent portal.
CampusOS does not send an SMS or email when a student is absent at present. Parents check attendance on their portal. To see it working, book a free demo.
